Are You a Yo-Yo Dieter? Time to STOP!

You know what’s healthier than Kale? Having a good relationship with food!

Yo-Yo Dieting! Urgh! We’ve all either seen it or experienced it ourselves. Regaining the weight we’ve lost after a restricted and ‘unhealthy’ diet is much more common than actually keeping that new dress size you deprived yourselves to fit into. What’s more is that, once we need or want to lose weight again, it’s even harder than last time!

There’s only one answer and one way to change this vicious circle of yo-yo dieting. Changing our diet for the better in a way that we can sustain it, enjoy it, and most of all nourish ourselves to improve our mental and physical health… The Rev.Way.

First things first. Let’s Dump this ‘I’m on a Diet’ Mentality

The human body reacts to weight loss the same way it would react to starvation – by conserving energy. Believe it or not, the brain uses information about calorie intake and the body’s amount of stored energy to determine whether to release appetite-enhancing or appetite-suppressing hormones. Pretty cool eh? One way the body adapts to weight loss is by changing the production of appetite-regulating hormones such as ghrelin and leptin, assisting us to gain weight by increasing our appetite and encouraging fat storage. Due to the change of these hormones, it means that when an individual suddenly switches back to their old habit of eating, weight gain is even easier than before!

A study by Delahanty LM, Pan Q, Jablonski KA, et al. researched the ‘Effects of weight loss, weight cycling, and weight loss maintenance on diabetes incidence and change in cardiometabolic traits in the Diabetes Prevention Program’ and found out that yo-yo dieters have a greater risk to diabetes, hypertension, gallbladder stones, and shorter telomere length – which means rapid aging!!!

Secondly. Let’s Change our Diet Permanently.

And this is NOT me saying we need to stay on that poor, restricted diet we once endured to get down to our ideal ‘size’. This is me saying we need to make changes to our nutrition. The key to losing weight and keeping it off forever is changing our diet forever. ‘Fad’ diets may work short-term, but the feeling of constant deprivation is almost inevitable! However, by consuming high nutrient foods regularly, that deadly sensation of relentless hunger will be a thing of the past and a feeling of great satisfaction after meals will stop us reaching for the biscuit tin and in turn, will be much easier to stick to this new way of nutritious eating, improving health and preventing future weight regain.
